New Rug and Pinterest Fail

9:48 AM

So I have never showed you guys a picture of the rug in my office, because honestly, I'm ashamed of it...

True story, in all my office posts previous to this, I have only shown "neck up" pictures of my desk/office decor trying to hide this savage beast.

Its just a $20 sad and dirty Ikea rug that has been a sit-in while I tried to find something a little more "me" for the office.

Enter Urban Outfitters.
Originally, I wanted a good chevron print, but when I saw Harringbone pattern from across the room for such a reasonable price (only $89 for a 5x7), I pounced.

Here is a better view of the full thing
I thought the dark navy would be a nice contrast with the muted tones I have in the middle of my office (Restoration Hardware burlap wingback chairs, my wood desk, khaki colored walls, wood floors, etc) so I figured I would give it a shot (did I mention I looked up a 15% off coupon code AND got free shipping? Score)

A week later... It was here.
I even informed Chris of my excitement...
Sadly, Chris had this little thing called "work" going on in the middle of the day, so I unpacked it and draped it across my chairs to see what it would look like.

As always, Rocky had to be first to test it out.
Since the rug is a bit this thin, I knew it would slide around the floor unless there was a pad underneath, but I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try something that I saw on Pinterest.

Trying caulk on the bottom of a rug instead of a grip pad...
Picture and description from HERE
Seemed simple enough and hey, if its on Pinterest, it has to work, right?
I let it dry overnight JUST to make sure (I didnt want caulk residue stuck on the floor)....(out of context, that maybe the grossest sentence I have ever typed)...
After we put the rug into place, again, Rocky had to make sure it met his standards.
But after one day of the caulk trial rug, it left my office/rug looking like this...
Yea, definitely didnt work.  The rug was still really floppy and didnt stay in place at all when the dogs ran by (going to and from the window is a high traffic area... security watch)

So I gave up on the caulk idea and opted for the underneath grip rug.
After I cut it to size, I decided to hot glue the corners, just to really make sure everything was ultra secure.
Final reveal in 3, 2, 1....
ohhhh I likey....
I really like how the navy tones divide the wood grain from the floor and my desk but its not too dark...

Like pretty floor art.
For all those interested, this is how close Rocky stands to me when I'm trying to take pictures...
Personal space issue at its finest.

Here's how my office now looks when you walk in from the hallway.
So what do you guys think? Like it? Think it works?  Have you ever tried something from Pinterest that just didnt seem to work out?

Hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend!

  9. Oh my gosh, LOVE it, and your whole office! It's so pretty! Glad to know the caulking trick doesn't work. I'd seen it on Pinterest too and thought I'd try it sometime. Now I know not to bother.

  10. Love it! I love the blue against the wood (I'm slowly adding in pops of blue in our house with wood floors too). And the design is fun yet not overwhelming. Good choice.

  11. I love the rug--pattern & color! I wondered about the caulk trick. Good to know that I shouldn't waste my time with it. LOL @ Rocky. Too cute!

  13. I had a huge failure over Christmas...tried the whole transfer a photo to a canvas thing...took me 4 or 5 canvases before I got it right and I still wasn't that impressed with it! Where did you get your United States poster think? Is it cloth? Paper? It's really cute! Keep up the good work!

    1. I've never tried the photo-transfer-to-a-canvas but BRAVO to you for trying!! I got my United States poster at HomeGoods for $29.99 (I think) over the summer. Its actually just a print on texture poster board (or at least that's what it keeps like). Whatever it is, I LOVE it and love how the colors go with everything... Keep your eyes pealed at HomeGoods or TJMaxx... Im sure it will pop up somewhere there again :-)

  14. Do you know that is the only Chevron anything I really like. I have looked at Chevron jackets, pants, leggings, upholstered chairs, etc. That is also a good trick about hot gluing at the corners. I read an article that said you could sew those rubber seal jar ring things to rugs and that would prevent slipping, rumpling and such. It did not work for me. I take pics for ebay and my cats want to stand on everything which I'm sure prospective buyers really want to see or they want to rub their heads against the camera. The dogs will come up right in front of what I am trying to photograph and just stare at me. Sometimes if I take a picture of them, they'll walk away. The office looks great, professional yet with a personality. Looks like a good place for working.
