Spring Time Storage
10:34 PMSo this weekend while browsing my usual "route" for garage sales, I came upon this little beauty for $15 at a charity garage sale. (It was benefiting an animal rescue charity, so I didnt haggle since its was going to such a great cause!!)
First step was removing the face plate so I can get a good even coat...
Apparently the person who comes up with all the creative names was on vacation when this color was up to be named...
After a solid coat of primer and several light, even coats of "warm yellow", this is how he, now she, looked...
What a watch dog...
I gave it a day to dry, and for me to think what else I wanted to do with it...
I had already done stripes on my table redo that I did a while back....
And the stenciling thing with the $10 solid wood desk I revamped...
So I was running low on ideas... until I went to bed and it hit me... Mod Podge.
I havent worked with Mod Podge since my sophomore year of college, but from what I remember (making my Theta lap board for my Little) it was a great way to secure images onto a flat surface....
The only thing I needed now, was an image or design... Enter Michaels....
The process was easy enough... first, cut the paper to the size of the drawer...
Just such a transformation! It definitely stands out and is a fun, new, unique piece...

This is totally amazing!! I LOVE the paper you chose, it looks great with the yellow and it's not too matchy-matchy :) Oh how I wish I could score one of these at a yard sale! You truly transformed it. Love!

ReplyDeleteOh my! This is the sweetest storage cabinet I've ever seen. We grabbed the old filing cabinet over at my mother's, and we have not gotten close to beginning that project. My husband would not be happy if I did this (he just doesn't understand, lol), but this is great inspiration! Saw your post on Boogieboard Cottage!

Seriously amazing!!! I think you picked the perfect paper and color. I've been wanting to find an old file cabinet too and just paint it, but this is fabulous. Does the paper feel like it's going to hold up? If not, I guess you could always just add more Mod Podge.

You are never going to believe this but I just got one of these exact same chests off of the sidewalk mall (read: trash picker here) and I had no idea how to get those handles off!! Thanks for a great tutorial and inspiration. I add paper and fabric to my pieces all the time. It just makes a piece pop. BTW, I am also loving, I should say LOVING, the striped top table. VEry inventive and retro which is where my heart lies naturally.

I thought I would need to brush the mod.podge onto the metal, apply the paper, then mod.podge again over the top of the paper. Looks like yours did great without all the extra steps and goop. ReplyDeleteDid you glue the paper to the drawer front before you hot glued the edges and Modge Podged over it?
ReplyDeleteNo, I simply bent the paper around the shelves then cut the excess off. Once it was kind of molded around the drawer, I lifted up the edges and hot glued around the boarder. It helps to keep it as taught as possible so the drawers don't bunch up when against each other.

I scored some amazing and FREE metal cabinets from a geneology library at church (they went digital). it has stickers all over it with file numbers so i assume i can get that off with some sort of 'goo be gone'? do i have to sand it or anything first? I have been procrastinating even what to do at all with these, knowing it would be 'something' but you have inspired me, I can't wait to have time to do this!!

I have a really silly question, but what KIND of filing cabinet is this? It's unlike any filing cabinet I've ever seen. I'm asking because I saw your post on Pinterest and started whining to my husband that we needed to find one to refurbish into jewelry storage :)
ReplyDeleteTo be completely honest, I have NO idea since I just kind of stumbled upon it at a garage sale. If I had to guess, I would say its a hardware/tool cabinet since the drawers are so small. I agree it would look great for jewelry storage! Good luck!!

I just used a basic can of spray paint primer ($3.49 and found with all the other spray paint). Just gives the actual paint a little something to grab on to and helps use less of the colored paint! Have fun!

I saw on a previous post that someone had asked you if you knew what kind of filing cabinet it was, to which you said you have no clue, but.. was there any company logo or emblem? 2. did you sand down the cabinet before painting? The top was a mess and I didn't know if you washed it, or sanded it.
3. When you open and close the drawers does the folded paper "catch" on the opening? Do you think the hot glue gun will hold it down for several years?

Delete1. Nope, I did not paint the inside of the drawers. I was mod podging and hot gluing inside instead of outside which is probably why they look a bit darker. They are still a silvery blue.
2. Nope #2... I didnt sand anything down. I just made sure to wash it really well and wipe it down before starting. The top WAS a mess, but after cleaning it off then giving it a good coat of primer, you could barely tell!
3. As far as the drawers go... no catching so far! Granted, I don't open each drawer 20x a day, but for me its doing great! Im not sure how long the glue gun will hold everything down but I made sure to pull everything taught when I did it the first time so everything is staying in place! (I HOPE it stays down for several years! If not, regluing it will only take about 5 min)

ReplyDeleteLove your idea for the filing cabinet. I just started mine and it's looking really cute. I have a couple of ideas that might be better then scrapbook paper. I did mine with fabric and i also used spray adhesive to put my fabric onto my drawers and then modpoged over that. The spray adheisive hold really good and then down the road if you want to change it to a different fabric i think it will pull right of the drawers. Just some ideas. Thanks for sharing this.

ReplyDeleteHow many cans of spray paint did you go through on this guy? And when you said you primed it, did you buy a primer spray paint or did you just mean that you did a base coat of the yellow??
I used about a half can of spray paint primer and then a full can of "warm yellow" spray paint.

DeleteI'm restyling an old metal cart and I was wondering if you used anything to sand down the cabinet? If so, what did you use? My cart has some rust so I wasn't sure if I should just sand it or just prime it first.
ReplyDeleteHey Jasilyn... Nope, I didnt use anything to sand it down. I just cleaned it with some lysol wipes and went to town with the spray paint... However, I did start with a spray paint primer before spraying it yellow... Just helps with even coverage especially since this piece was a bit darker...its holding up great so far!! ReplyDeleteOkay so I am now baffled by what I did wrong when I tried to spray paint a file cabinet last spring. I started with a very similarly colored cabinet, and tried using a very similar shade of yellow, but a WHOLE CAN of spray paint didn't even cover one side adequately. Does brand matter? I used Krylon instead of Rustoleum (it's what our store sells). I was so disappointed because I could never afford enough cans of spray paint to make it worth sprucing up a yard sale cabinet. :( It's been sitting in my shed ever since!
ReplyDeleteI was recently given a brown file cabinet that isn't exactly ugly, but it is scratched and I was wanting to do something with it. Thanks for the idea! I had already considered fabric for the doors and painting it, but I wasn't sure it would look right. Now I have the confidence to go ahead and pretty it up! :-)

ReplyDeleteJust found your blog this morning.".better late then never!" 2013 is coming to an end and I'm thinking ahead of all the projects I'd like to tackle in 2014 and making a long list. I may not be able to do some of them myself but I will hire a handyman since DH is not physically able to do them. On garage improvements/projects, I will need to wait till late Spring/early Summer when it is warmer to work in the garage. Price some of the building supplies ahead of time, like pegboard, lumber. Use what we already have too. Watch for sales at Home Depot or Lowe's.
